Yummy Bites – Your Friday Night Destination

We all have those weeks; the ones that never end and somehow every day feels like that dreaded Monday. However, you tough it out and finally reach the finish line that is Friday. For all your hard work, you deserve a nice night out that includes a very nice drink. Not just any place will do. You deserve to treat yourself to Shoal Creek Tavern in Highland Village.

We had the opportunity to visit and Oscar gave us a warm welcome which included recommending a few suggestions on the menu as well as a few drinks. Whether you enjoy a nice stiff drink or something with a fruity taste, you’ll be sure to find something to your liking. We started off with the Smoked Old Fashioned which had Basil Hayden Bourbon, vanilla, bitters and smoke. There was a nice orange peel in it which complimented the woodsy scent of the bourbon. Another drink that was ordered was the Flor de Puerto Rico which was made with Bacardi, pineapple juice, lime, hibiscus syrup and ginger beer. Let’s just say we had to keep reminding ourselves to drink slowly and responsibly as the cocktails were absolutely delicious.

For our appetizers we tried the fried calamari and clams along with an order of the smoked salmon cakes. The calamari and clams were tossed with a garlic parmesan and served with a basil lemon pepper remoulade. We’d like to say we took pictures of the crab cakes since they were to die for but we were too busy eating them to think about taking a photo. Needless to say we were already well on our way to being fully relaxed.

They have a wonderful menu that made it incredibly difficult to decide on what to try but luckily as there were several of us we were able to try a little bit of everything. The Lobster Bisque had a bit of a kick as it had habanero sausage. It was super tasty and didn’t last more than five minutes. The second thing we tried was the Shoal Creek Ranch Chicken. We highly recommend that this is your first introduction to Shoal Creek Tavern as it is the best chicken we’ve ever tried. It’s fried chicken with pork belly, ranch, tomatoes and melted jack served with garlic cheddar mashed and a spicy ratatouille. Also up on the menu was a Chicken and Polenta Corn Cake. It tastes almost like an enchilada so it was a pleasant surprise. It is topped with chicken and hatch chili cream. Last on the menu was the Shoal Creek Enchilada Monterey. It is pulled chicken and cheese in a crispy wonton wrapper topped with crab and spinach in a jack cheese sauce served with spicy ratatouille and Jalapeno Jack cheese grits. If your mouth isn’t watering already you might need to go to the doctor to get your taste buds checked.

We’d love to say we tried their dessert menu. Unfortunately, we were completely and utterly stuffed. Oscar had to roll us out to our cars at the end of the night. Overall, it was a pleasant and relaxing experience and a great way to end a very long week.
