The Revolutionary Dental Implant

During a routine appointment, I had an enlightening conversation with one of my pediatric patients. As she tapped away on her smartphone, our conversation led to her inquiring about how phones worked when I was young. Not realizing that it had been a while since I had thought about it, a rush of almost comedic memories arose including stretching cords into other rooms for privacy, making collect calls for “long distance”, and even, at the very least, needing to remember phone numbers.

The conversation reminded me of the great climate we live in with incredibly revolutionizing advances, and when I reflect on a treatment I believe has recently revolutionized dentistry and dental care, I immediately think dental implants.

A dental implant is essentially a titanium post that integrates with the bone in your jaw to replace the root of your tooth and is restored with a crown. This on its own is an incredible feat as we can actually replace a tooth without having to use dentures or dental bridges. Even so, dental implants can offer so much more and have produced even more advances.

With the digital age upon us, we are now able to digitally plan implant placements and restorations prior to the treatment using 3D radiographs, digitally scanned impressions, and printed surgical guides. Furthermore, we can plan multiple restorations at once or even use multiple implants to restore removable or permanent dentures. Restorations can also be easily removed or replaced by simply removing them from the stable implant. Additionally, advancements in the fabrication of dental implants has resulted in success rates of implant placements reaching up to 95% with minimal post-operative recovery.

Dental implants have certainly revolutionized my practice and have allowed me to offer a spectrum of treatment to my patients. If you are considering replacing missing teeth, please visit your dentist to see if you are a candidate. It can be life changing.

Happy smiling!
