Longtime golf coach leaves Guyer for rival school

Roddy Adams may not be Guyer’s golf coach anymore, but he’s not leaving Denton.

The longtime Wildcat coach confirmed late last month that he is now the new head coach at Denton Ryan, Guyer’s longtime Denton ISD rival. Interestingly, his departure ends a 12-year stint at Guyer yet renews his former relationship with the Raiders.

Adams previously coached at Ryan, and at neighboring Denton High, before helping open Guyer.

“I think this is a good time for me to do this,” Adams told the Denton Record-Chronicle in May.

“We’ve got a lot of trophies in the case now, and so I’d like to go see what I can do [at Ryan].”

Adams coached Denton High until 2005 while at the same time running the Ryan golf program from 1999 to 2002. Guyer opened in 2005 and Adams immediately left to help start that program. Some of his career highlights at Guyer include taking both the boys and girls teams to the state tournament in 2014. Adams was later named girls coach of the year by the North Texas High School Golf Coaches Association.

Lantana Living wrote an article on Adams in July 2014, shortly after he won that award. His girls finished 12th at state that year while the boys – who were there for a second straight year – finished in a tie for sixth place. It was the first time a girls golf team from Denton ISD appeared state in nearly three decades.

Adams is a longtime Denton resident. He graduated from Denton High in 1979.
