Community Rallies For Navy Seal Injured In Crash

Community Rallies For Navy Seal Injured In Crash

by Steve Gamel

The Denton County community and beyond is rallying together to support a local American hero who was in a near-fatal car crash on Sept. 3 that forced doctors to amputate both his legs.

Dan Licardo, a former U.S. Navy Seal whose 16 years of experience includes combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, was on his way to pick up his son when he suffered a seizure while behind the wheel. His truck veered off the road and crashed at the intersection of Farm-to-Market Road 2499 and Sagebrush Dr. in Flower Mound. He was airlifted to Parkland Hospital, where he is recovering.

In the meantime, the single father has been met with a groundswell of support from family, friends, and total strangers. A Facebook page called Stay Strong Dan Licardo was created to share information on his recovery while also being a landing page for donation efforts that include everything from blood drives to t-shirt sales. As of press time, the page already had more than 2,900 likes. A subsequent gofundme account has raised nearly $152,000. There’s also a Navy Seals Fund that has raised close to $53,000.

Crosstimbers Family YMCA held a Stay Strong Dan Blood Drive on Sept. 11. The event received so much support that officials decided to have a second blood drive. For more information on upcoming events and T Shirt locations, follow Stay Strong Dan Licardo facebook page.

“There were so many people there who were willing to wait more than an hour to give blood,” said Liz Wallace, art director at Murray Media who was one of the many in attendance offering support. “It was a blessing to be around so many selfless people – many of whom were supporting someone they’d never met.”
